Jewellery Care and Handling

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Dear jewellery is a precious collection, a daily essential for all jewellery lovers. If you wish your gems, crystal, pearls, silver to remain sparkle and become the admiration and attraction among your friends and colleagues, do not fail to protect and cherish them. In order for the lovely piece to last, it is worth being properly taken care of. The following are some care & handling tips that we offer to you.

  • Remove your jewellery once you are at home.
  • Clean the jewellery with a dry cloth unless otherwise as advised on the care instruction stated by the jewellery seller.
  • Keep all your jewellery in an airtight container or zip lock bag if possible, else a closed jewellery box is advisable.
  • Never leave/store your jewellery in the bathroom especially silver jewellery as metals and some gems are afraid of damp.
  • It is necessary to keep your jewellery away from heat and sunlight as they may make your jewellery loses its original color.
  • No-Tarnish Strips – put no-tarnish strips in with your jewelleries and change the strips every two to three months.
  • Chalk – another substitute of no-tarnish strips is Chalk.  Put a few pieces of chalkboard chalk in with your jewellery. The chalk works similarly to the strips, absorbing the airborne substances that cause tarnish. Chalk should also be changed every couple of months.
  • Silver Tarnish Cloth – wrap your jewellery with Silver Tarnish Cloth, also known as Pacific Cloth, which is available at any fabric stores.  It also works well too if you cut pieces of it to fit inside the drawers or compartment of your jewellery box.
  • Quick Wipedown – give each piece of jewellery a quick wipe with a Sunshine cloth or other jewelry cleaning/polishing cloth after wearing it. This will help remove dirt/things that settled on the surface of your jewellery while it was out of its closed storage, and this will help prevent tarnish from forming.

All you need to know about Cubic Zirconia

Monday, January 11th, 2010

When zirconium oxide is found in the form of cubic crystalline it is known as cubic zirconia. It is generally colourless, hard and in the optically flawless form. It can come in the variety of colours. However, people get confused in zircon and zirconium. Zircon is made of zirconium silicate. Since formulated in 1976 Cubic Zirconia gives a strong competition to diamonds. It is a synthetic element which is very important in economically terms. Synthetic moissanite is the latest cultivated material giving a solid competition to this metal.

This synthetic metal has a very high melting point of 2750C.Earlier there is no crucible available that can hold this metal in the molten state.  However, later the stabilization of this metal was realised and a new product that is stabilized zirconia was made in 1930. This synthetic material was used in the form of polycrystalline ceramic.  Even there is a natural counterpart of this metal, which is found in metamict zircon. Later people realised that cubic zirconia can also be used in different sort of jewelleries.

As the metal is generally known as diamond’s lookalike, it is used at places in the place of diamond. It is used in jewellery in the place of diamond and since is cheaper in rate hence it is used at a large level. You can identify the difference between an actual diamond ring and cubic zirconia rings by observing the shine that is reflected by the two.  Cubic zirconia always has less brilliance than diamond. Hence when you would go through artificial cz jewellery, you can simply come to know about it. However, later scientists have also come up with the new uses of this metal in lasers and other sort of optical applications.

You can find a variety of colours in cubic zirconia. You just have to name and various colours of these stones are ready to adorn you.  From yellow, orange, red, green with purple, pink, golden brown, all colours are available in this synthetic metal. To achieve these colours, various metal oxides are added to this metal. These metal oxides can be cerium, chromium, erbium, neodymium and titanium. Apart from these colours, this metal also undergoes various processes to add lustre and hardness like diamond before embedding it in a jewellery piece.  After going through all the process this metal is cut down into gemstones and is ready to serve the jeweller market.

Wedding Jewellery: Metals in Demand

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Who fought well! The Tacori blue bridal hairpin with five faceted blue jade petals with a topaz in brightest silver or the five carat Tiffany Novo diamond engagement ring?

Don’t be surprised. We are not talking about any designer fight. It is about the two best friend brides in the movie ‘Bride Wars’. The movie, starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, featured wedding jewellery by Tiffany & Co. through the characters played by these two charming actresses. They showcased two very elegant types of wedding jewellery. One is the diamond engagement ring and the other is the tacori blue bridal hairpin. Like ‘Bride Wars’, there are tens of thousands of movies across the world cinema where featuring new designs of wedding jewellery is a very common thing. In Hollywood specially, most of the big names in the fashion industry promotes their new ranges/designs through films. Since, film is the most effective way of promotion.

Though these films try to convey only the latest designs and types of wedding jewellery and casual jewelleries, yet they bring only the addition to the older section of types and designs. From necklaces to hair pins they add newer collections. With new collection comes the use of different metals. From a pendant to a necklace, every single jewellery item is now available in all the metals present and used in the industry. These are platinum or white gold, yellow gold or gold – Aurum, silver and even the bronze.

But could you imagine upliftment without a base! Certainly you cannot. Similarly, in case of jewelleries also, you cannot ignore the old and traditional styles. For example in UK, the wedding dress and the wedding jewellery are purchased together. And the material in demand in UK for wedding jewellery is platinum. Likewise there are different traditions worldwide when it comes to the material to be used in the jewellery. Worldwide the most famous metal for jewellery is Gold. Almost every second women in the world has one gold ornament with her. Immediately after gold the metal in use wide often is silver. There are other metals also in the scene of jewellery making. White gold is the next most common thing used in the jewelleries across the world.

You can also find some wedding jewelleries using the handmade technique. Handmade jewelleries are not cheaper than those made of either platinum or gold. Though they sound less costly yet the craftsmanship they demand is of higher quality and it requires specialists. And as you know specialists’ inclusion add extra to the cost of that jewellery. So, ultimately it would be you who have to pay an extra for a handmade item. In India, almost 79 percent of people prefer the traditional handmade gold jewelleries for every special occasion like a wedding. In some places of Africa and Andaman Island using bones and claws of animals in jewelleries is a very common thing. Some people even use the shells of pearls as traditional wearing. For example, Riji the pearl shell is traditionally worn by Aboriginal man of Australia. They mainly use these shells for their masculine jewelleries.

So, irrespective of geographical location and caste; use of metals like platinum, gold, silver, bronze and even bones are there in jewellery making whether it is meant for a casual wearing or for a special occasion like a wedding.
