How expensive should an engagement ring be?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Many people will have many different opinions on this, so to answer your question, don’t be too hard on yourself. Your intent is there for your love, and the ring will be a symbol of it. You even said yourself that you want to put more money into buying a home, etc. and that is a great mature line of thought. If you and the future Mrs see eye to eye on things, the ring won’t be an issue. As a suggestion, you can go to retail stores which offer great discounts on beautiful settings; or you can look online for deals. No one has to know WHERE you bought it from; that’s only for you two to know. You may want to ask what style or settings she likes. I cant speak for women, but I find it great that a man will think of the future money spent on more important things to create a life together, rather than focus on a ring too much. Besides, you can always upgrade as soon as your first anniversary if extra earnings come your way.

Some women will tell you 1 &1/2 month to 3 months of YOUR salary. This is bull crap. Women who insist on this guideline just want a rock on their hand to show off to friends. Just remember, if you spend a tremendous amount of money on a ring, and the relationship does not work out, she does NOT have to give it back. An engagement ring should be what you are comfortable with, after all, it is the relationship that is important here, not what you could afford to buy.

I always find that “three months salary” rule of thumb to be a little extreme. When I was in the process of getting engaged I asked the same question. Someone told me that and I just about had a heart attack. Not to talk numbers but I make a very good living. Three months of salary is outrageous.

We did things a little out of the ordinary. I actually went with her to pick out her ring. That way we were both sure that she would love it. When the saleswoman asked what our budget was I said $2000. I personally think spending more than that is crazy. We actually ended up designing a ring from scratch. I find that doing this is actually cheaper. The jeweler will give you an assortment of bands to select from and then you will get to choose the exact diamonds that will go in your ring. We both had fun picking every single stone in her ring. I feel like its more personal that way. Surprisingly, they had a similar ring to the one that I designed but mine was about 1/2 ct. larger. Her ring was $700 LESS than the already designed ring.

Anyways, I would suggest spending what your fiance’ (and yourself if your doing it the way I did) is comfortable spending. Don’t believe the “three month salary” rule. Buy a ring that you love and is affordable. The last thing you’ll want to do is pawn it to pay rent! Another thing, the majority of the people I know had their engagement rings financed. Don’t allow your fiance’ to do that. Why should you start your married life in even more debt when you could simply save for a few weeks and buy it out right? Financing engagement rings is a bad idea in my opinion, but maybe that’s just me. It mainly depends on both of you.

In truth, when the situation is right, you will know to make this important decision based upon the person you plan on getting it for….and not the price. Not to say that money should not be a consideration (as it is to all of us I’m sure), but I have learned that jewelry’s true value is based on the “sentiment” and not the “superficial” aspects .

An Architectural Echo: Antique Art Deco Engagement Ring

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Antique art deco engagements rings take after the architectural design of the period, art deco.  Known for its use of geometric shapes and colors, the architecture of the period stood out for its unique flair.  In the same way, antique art deco engagement rings show an eclectic style.  They emerged from Paris, first introduced at the world’s fair, increasing in popularity through the 1920′s.

Colorful Pieces of Art

Antique art deco engagement rings look like pieces of art.  There is rarely a single stone, or solitaire, ring.  Normally, there is a central stone that is accented with the surrounding, colored gems, so that the entire piece fits together in one pattern.  Part of art deco design is the geometric patterns used, and these are incorporated into the rings.  The designers wanted the rings sleek and modern (for the period of time) and produced settings and bands that were intricate and complimented the gems selected for each piece.

The bands and settings were usually of yellow or white gold, although platinum was also a metal of choice, since it is clear and white and off-sets the colored jewels in the rings nicely.  Since there are multiple stones used in an antique art deco engagement ring, the bands are normally not at thin as other eras, in order to hold the multiple stones as well as keep the band in place on the finger to best show off its design.

Making a Choice

Antique art deco engagement rings are beautiful, colorful and artistic.  They are an excellent choice for a lifetime commitment.  However, there are some important things to think about when contemplating art deco rings.

First, since there are multiple stones in the setting, and the stones are colorful, it is wise to think about wearing the band with any outfit on any occasion.  If the bride likes to match her jewelry with the outfit, then an art deco ring isn’t always the best choice, since the colors in the rings don’t always match the outfit or occasion.

Another important aspect of the antique art deco engagement ring is that it is difficult to clean.  Since the emphasis was placed on the artistic design, sometimes the antique engagement ring mounting doesn’t hold up as well during cleaning.  In addition, it is difficult to clean between the multiple stones, being careful not to damage the mounting or settings, so a professional jeweler is often needed to do a thorough cleaning.

Some have hinged openings but largely are continuous bracelets. They stem from and form a traditional ingredient of Indian woman’s jewellery and there are several customs regarding this article of jewellery in Indian culture. Materials which are frequently used to produce bangles include glass and wood. Metal and glass bangles are ultimate in terms of regard in Indian society.

If you are searching for silver bangles for yourself or as a gift, there are a few important things you need to know that will indeed impact their pricing. First of all the bangles thickness. One more crucial concern when buying silver bangles is the sort of silver used. There are two types of silver accessible, specifically solid and sterling silver. An additional metal known as German silver, is as well obtainable but is in fact an alloy of other metals and contains no hint of real silver. Solid silver will dull upon air contact consequently the items exterior will react to the oxygen in the air and eat away.

Should silver discolor, it will go darker until it eventually turns black. Sterling silver on the alternatively is alloy silver with a drop of copper mixed in. The copper has a reinforcing effect on the metal, therefore it is less possible to taint. If you want to escape cleaning your bangles regularly, mull over investing in sterling silver ones.

Silver bangles ought to be cleaned regularly and stored in a dust free container. This will help prolong the bangles sparkle, keeping them in pristine state. Metal bracelets repeatedly foster layers of grime derived from skin and body oils. These oils will encompass the bangles outside and make it muted and with no glimmer. Cleaning your bangles is a particularly trouble-free job if you possess the accurate apparatus and knowledge.

Sterling silver has a tendency to tarnish with wear and tear as well as with time. Silver bangles should be cleaned with a mild soap and water. Allow water to bead, and then lightly pat dry with a gentle, dirt free rag. Simple sterling silver jewellery can be cleaned with the greatest of effortlessness by just using a silver dipping liquid, paste or polishing cloth.

A different point is whether you desire a plain or a decorative silver bracelet with engravings or inlays from stone or enamel. The more detailed and heavily ornamented the bangle the higher the value will be. If you are someone that prefers minimalism, a silver bangle devoid of any embellishment is a definite must for your jewellery box.

Should you though, prefer bold decorations and detail but would like something not including gems or inlays, many etched bangles are accessible. This is a good selection if you are looking for a silver bangle that will mix together well with other jewellery attire essentials.

Ensure that the bangle is sized appropriately, by easily trying it on before you acquire it. Wrist and hand sizes adjust among persons. Lots of bangles have no gap so they have got to be big enough to glide over the hand, but not so markedly sizeable that they slip off. If you have the choice to get a bangle with hinges, you will notice it is much easier to discover ones that fit you a good deal better, as you can open for effortless sliding over your hand.

There is a substantial variety of silver bangles to make a choice from, that you’re certain to hit upon bangles that fit your wardrobe and tastefulness.

Choosing the Right Pair of stud earrings for You

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

If you have a broader face you’ll probably want to go with princess cut diamond. If your face is thinner you’ll look best with round cut diamond studs. You’ll also want to make sure that the metal used in the setting matches your skin tone. One of the most important things to look at when buying your diamond stud earrings is the setting. Even the most beautiful diamond stud will look terrible in a bad setting.

Wedding Dress: Complimenting the Wedding Mood

Friday, October 9th, 2009

What is so special about a wedding! Is this the decoration covering whole the venue! Is it the bride or the groom? Or the dresses and jewelleries they wear? Probably and mostly the specialty is the fact that wedding is once in a life time occasion. And most other things related to it like the decoration, dress, wedding jewellery only compliment in this process. Because wedding is an occasion that comes only and mostly once in a lifetime so other complimentary things like the wedding gown, wedding jewellery, the bouquet, the bridal veil, the bridesmaid and her dress and jewellery become very important in this occasion.

Though the main important factor in a wedding is the couple about to get married, yet there are important and very important things like the wedding dress and the wedding jewellery. Traditionally brides all over the world, irrespective of cast, religion, tribes and society, prefer to be most beautifully dressed and a bride is the centre of attention in a wedding ceremony. Depending on the religion, society, geographical difference, culture a wedding gown and wedding jewellery can vary accordingly. There is always a good piece of difference between the western wedding dresses and eastern wedding dresses as well as wedding jewelleries. Western wedding dresses are traditionally white whereas the eastern counterparts are mostly red. The white is the colour of mourning for the eastern countries and using white in a wedding dress is not even dreamt in these nations. Even in France till the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots with Francois II, white was considered as inauspicious. It was the official colour of mourning. But with the wedding dresses worn by Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Victoria in colour white the use of white in wedding dresses came into being in France. In western countries dark colours are not preferred for wedding dress. Colours like red and black are mostly avoided in wedding dresses. Black is the colour for mourning and red is something associated with prostitution.

Most of the wedding dresses in China, India and Vietnam are red in colour, the traditional color of good luck and auspiciousness in Asia. Nowadays, many women prefer not to wear the red and choose other colors. In modern Chinese weddings, the bride usually wears the white Western dress and then changes from a white gown to a red gown later in the day. Gold coloured gowns are also popular among Chinese brides. In India the traditional the traditional wedding dress is a sari and lehenga choli accompanied by handmade wedding jewellery in gold. In Vietnam, the traditional wedding dress is Ao Dai and Vietnamese brides prefer lesser amount of wedding jewellery. In Japan, brides use to wear three four traditional wedding dresses throughout the ceremony named Kimono in white and other colours. In Indonesia, Javanese people wear Kebaya as their wedding dress.

In America the indigenous peoples like Hopi, Pueblo, Delawares, Klamath, Modoc, and Yurok etc. have different traditions in wearing a wedding dress. Some of them use natural materials whereas others use animal skins as a tradition.

Wherever you go, whatever you prefer, you would always find wedding dresses and accompanying wedding jewellery at its vast differences across the world. But main theme attached to a wedding dress is that the Bride is the centre of attention irrespective of any difference available worldwide.
