How to Set Up Your Online Jewelry Store

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

This article is about the details of online store setup that comes before you actually go-to-market with your product. This is essential so that you don’t make mistakes that cost you time or worse, discourage you from continuing. Selling online is an art and a science and this article is meant to bring both together so that your store delivers results in the way you want it to.

First, the science of an online store – the features & functionality. Jewelry is a very personal purchase so it is very important that your online store have the features that display each piece of jewelry in a very fine way. There are no shortcuts on the visuals; you will have to include very beautiful photographs of your jewelry. If you can afford video, it is also another medium but only if it is of the highest quality. Beyond the visual with several angles and possibly with someone wearing it, your store should also be able to display similar or complimentary pieces, a description of each item and the option to add to a wish list while perusing your catalog. Finally, the shopping cart solution you pick must be search engine friendly that allows you to associate keywords and phrases to each piece of jewelry.

Now to the art of the site – the look and feel. It is important to create an attractive site that puts your visitors in the mood to shop with you; almost irresistible. I’m sure you have searched on the web in the past and made navigation choices based on how a website felt or worked, right? Well, you need to take this into account when creating your own, remembering that purchasing is an emotional experience and especially so when it comes to jewelry. Use soft colors, lots of white space, and patterns and lines that match your style of jewelry. Since this is really the most important part of your online store, you should consult a graphic designer for direction and possibly design of the elements with a webmaster pulling them all together. When selling online, the quality of your store’s look and feel tells your customers if you are a warehouse store or a designer label boutique.

Also, make sure your logo represents your jewelry style. Even if you have had a logo for a long time, examine it for a match for what you want to convey online in your store. Don’t just use it because it won’t cost you anything to use what you already have. Getting a logo redesign does not cost that much.

Now that you have a sense of what is required in regard to the tools and art of the site, let’s talk about the dialogue. Yes, you will need to “talk” to your customers through your words on the pages. Use every opportunity to convey your message – are you offering low cost warehouse pricing or are you displaying a limited collection of fine designer pieces? Wordsmith carefully each paragraph, each description, and your store’s name/byline. All of this matters when selling on the Internet because you do not get a second chance to correct your communication; visitors simply leave.

Constructing a store online with forethought and professional advice is more important than just opening it up and pushing it out there to get sales. In the long run, your careful planning, choice of good tools, and execution on plan is what will give you an online jewelry store that delivers sales, reinforces your brand, and delivers value over the long term to you and your customer.

Happiness Is Simple

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

What is happiness? In fact, different people have different opinions. When a person is hungry, maybe his happiness is just a bowl of rice. For a vagrant, his happiness is just a comfortable house. For a girl who is in love, maybe her happiness is just a simple surprise brought by a Links of London necklace. In fact, happiness is simple.

Laural was a lucky girl who could have her own love. She was in love with her boyfriend named Jack. Jack loved her very much. Laural fell in love with him at first sight. She was attracted by his special disposition. Of course, Jack was also attracted by Laural. After all, Laural was an absolutely charming girl. Jack treated Laural as his treasure. They did what other lovers did. They went shopping, saw movies and took a walk together. When Laural encounted troubles, Jack was always hurrying to help her in time. He was always supporting and caring for Laural. For Laural, Jack was her happiness. For Jack, Laural was his happiness. In order to keep their love fresh, surprises and romance were absolutely necessary.

It was a cold day in winter. Jack was waiting for Laural to have dinner together outside her dormitory. Everything happened as usual. Laural hurried to run to Jack after dressing up beautifully. Though it was just a simple appointment Laural still wanted to have a good memory of it. She valued the days when she stayed with Jack. They had their dinner in the restaurant where they met at the first time. After dinner, they went to the park to have a walk hand in hand. They sat on the grassland when they felt a little tired. Jack took a beautiful necklace out of his pocket quietly. It was Links of London Flutter & Wow Silver Pendant. The sterling silver pendant featured the asymmetrical, heart-shaped cage playfully threaded through the necklace chain to allow the heart to dance to a beat all of its own. Its design was really special. Jack wore Laural the Links of London necklace. Laural hugged Jack excitedly. At the moment, Laural’s happiness was the Links of London necklace.

In a word, happiness is what you want and value.

How expensive should an engagement ring be?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Many people will have many different opinions on this, so to answer your question, don’t be too hard on yourself. Your intent is there for your love, and the ring will be a symbol of it. You even said yourself that you want to put more money into buying a home, etc. and that is a great mature line of thought. If you and the future Mrs see eye to eye on things, the ring won’t be an issue. As a suggestion, you can go to retail stores which offer great discounts on beautiful settings; or you can look online for deals. No one has to know WHERE you bought it from; that’s only for you two to know. You may want to ask what style or settings she likes. I cant speak for women, but I find it great that a man will think of the future money spent on more important things to create a life together, rather than focus on a ring too much. Besides, you can always upgrade as soon as your first anniversary if extra earnings come your way.

Some women will tell you 1 &1/2 month to 3 months of YOUR salary. This is bull crap. Women who insist on this guideline just want a rock on their hand to show off to friends. Just remember, if you spend a tremendous amount of money on a ring, and the relationship does not work out, she does NOT have to give it back. An engagement ring should be what you are comfortable with, after all, it is the relationship that is important here, not what you could afford to buy.

I always find that “three months salary” rule of thumb to be a little extreme. When I was in the process of getting engaged I asked the same question. Someone told me that and I just about had a heart attack. Not to talk numbers but I make a very good living. Three months of salary is outrageous.

We did things a little out of the ordinary. I actually went with her to pick out her ring. That way we were both sure that she would love it. When the saleswoman asked what our budget was I said $2000. I personally think spending more than that is crazy. We actually ended up designing a ring from scratch. I find that doing this is actually cheaper. The jeweler will give you an assortment of bands to select from and then you will get to choose the exact diamonds that will go in your ring. We both had fun picking every single stone in her ring. I feel like its more personal that way. Surprisingly, they had a similar ring to the one that I designed but mine was about 1/2 ct. larger. Her ring was $700 LESS than the already designed ring.

Anyways, I would suggest spending what your fiance’ (and yourself if your doing it the way I did) is comfortable spending. Don’t believe the “three month salary” rule. Buy a ring that you love and is affordable. The last thing you’ll want to do is pawn it to pay rent! Another thing, the majority of the people I know had their engagement rings financed. Don’t allow your fiance’ to do that. Why should you start your married life in even more debt when you could simply save for a few weeks and buy it out right? Financing engagement rings is a bad idea in my opinion, but maybe that’s just me. It mainly depends on both of you.

In truth, when the situation is right, you will know to make this important decision based upon the person you plan on getting it for….and not the price. Not to say that money should not be a consideration (as it is to all of us I’m sure), but I have learned that jewelry’s true value is based on the “sentiment” and not the “superficial” aspects .

Diamonds and diamond jewelry are all about passion and unique stories

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Hello all, Kerry Ryan here…

It’s all about you…

When I write these pieces they are meant for you. These stories are meant to educate, stir passion, and perhaps interest but all along they are for you.

They are for Joe who’s scraped together a couple of thousand through hard work to spend on an engagement ring for his girlfriend Mary, he knows it’s not a ton of money but you know what, to him it is so he needs to be treated like he’s spending a million bucks. The important part is that Joe is treated specially, not rushed by some uncaring salesperson that shows him one ring and flatly states, that’s what he can afford; take it or leave it. No way no how that is going to happen at Shenoa & Co. if I have anything to do with it. Joe will be treated as if he’s my most important customer because at that time he is and it is paramount that we find a diamond ring for Mary that is spectacular for her and that Joe is proud to give it to her.If I’ve learned anything is that the Joes in this world turn into lifelong customers who will recommend all friends and families when treated respectfully and fairly.

Diamond Engagement Rings

These stories are for Isabella who just landed that big promotion at her job and wants to treat herself to diamond earrings I know for a fact that most sales people blow off single woman because they feel that they are not buyers, not at Shenoa, we will spend the time to find the right pair of earrings. Hey Isabella, you know you are important, we think so too.

They are for a guy named Miles who he knows that he short changed his wife last Christmas but the economy stunk and he didn’t really feel comfortable with his standing at his job so he held off. Well not this Christmas, come hell or high water Jacqueline is getting that fancy yellow diamond ring that she’s had her eye on. Miles has been a longtime customer at Shenoa and knows their selection is unparalleled so this year it’s happening, hell you can’t take it with you, no time like the present.

Have a great day!
