Choosing diamonds and diamond jewellery can be a minefield. Follow the tips below when doing your research and making your selection, and you can’t go far wrong.

1) If you’re after sparkle, then round diamonds are probably the best.

2) Look for well balanced diamonds in terms of colour and clarity, and maximise it to whatever your budget can afford.  It is the whiteness and the inclusions which will give your diamond its overall appearance.

3) Add to #2 the fact that you need to be looking for well CUT diamonds – in other words, get a diamond with a cut grade of good or better.  If your diamond doesn’t have a cut grade, then look at the other characteristics such as the diamonds symmetry, depth and table etc and speak to your diamond specialists.

4) Choose a ring setting that looks not only pleasing to the eye, but which minimise the metal and exposes as much of the diamond as possible.  Ultimately, the less metal there is surrounding the diamond, the more light dispersion is facilitated within the diamond and, therefore, the more sparkle and brilliance the diamond will emit.

5) Once you have decided on your diamond and made your purchase, don’t foget this.  Diamonds are like anything else.  They need looking after.  Yes, they are the hardest natural mineral known to man.  However, they still need a bit of TLC from time to time.  Grease and dirt can get onto the diamond and into the setting, affecting the lustre of the diamond.  How do you clean it?  Simple – get some warm water with some mild washing up liquid in it and a soft bristled toothbrush, and away you go, remembering to rinse it in cold water at the end and drying with a soft cloth.  And, of course, making sure you put the plug into the sink before you start!!!!!
